Reasonable force describes the type and amount of force an officer reasonably believes is necessary to overcome resistance in a given situation. This standard is judged from the perspective of a reasonable officer on the scene, considering the threat level, the suspect’s actions, and the safety of everyone present. The force used should be proportional to the resistance and can be adjusted as the situation evolves; using more than necessary is excessive and unlawful, while too little force could fail to address the danger. The other terms don’t fit this idea—probation is a supervision period, proactive management refers to policy or leadership strategies, and release means letting someone go.
